The major functions of this Department are:
- Provision of extension services in private sector
- Lease of fishing rights, conservation, management and promotion of fisheries in water areas except rivers, canals and barrages pond area which have no boundaries.
- Training through open training schools
- Local publicity and awareness
- Fish stock replacement, in natural water bodies in respective domains
- Supervision of seed production, distribution and supply programme at all seed production units/hatcheries in respective domains
- Aquaculture development activities
- Collection of statistical data on fish and fisheries in respective domains
