Cooperative Department aims to facilitate the formation and working of Cooperative Societies for promotion of thrift, self-help and mutual aid.
The Cooperative movement flourished in Pakistan in 1950s and 1960s when small farmers hit by the isolation of migration from India. A number of development schemes were launched to make the allied primary societies economically viable and improve the living conditions of farmers and the society members.
Cooperatives is a provincial subject. The affairs of the Cooperative Societies are regulated under Cooperative Societies Act, 1925 and Cooperative Societies Rules, 1927.
This department is working with the vision to improve socio-economic conditions of persons of humble means through values of cooperation and to promote:
- Self-help and mutual aid
- Thrift and resource building
- Equality and democracy
